This building dating from the 1880's was part of what was originally known as the Athens Lunatic Asylum, later known as the Athens Mental Health Center and eventually abandoned for that purpose and acquired by Ohio University for preservation. It now houses the Kennedy museum with room to spare although bars on the windows attest to its former use.
The former asylum grounds including farm fields, apple orchard, gardens and cemeteries is now managed by Ohio University under the name "The Ridges".
