Just north of Lake Hope State Park along SR 278 the remains of a charcoal iron furnace active 1854–1874 according to the sign in front. Charcoal worked better than local coal for refining iron ore but the regional iron industry declined after the discovery of iron ore in the Lake Superior region. The smoke cleared, the forests re-grew and the surrounding area is now the Zaleski State Forest.
