At least seven pawpaw fruits are visible in this scene from one of many pawpaw jungles in the area. Two big ones in the foreground. Two on the ground. The rest in the trees further from the camera. It has been a good year for pawpaws with this patch filling a five pound bag in short order.
You can tell when pawpaws are ready to eat when they are soft to the touch and smell something like ripe bananas. If they are too high to squeeze or smell shake the tree gently. The ones that fall are usually ripe or will ripen in a day or so at room temperature.
